Snow Day

We have been jealously watching all the snow being dumped on Utah and other parts of the country this winter wishing that we had gotten that much. We had been planning to take our spring break this week to visit family in Utah and Idaho and go skiing, but had ultimately decided to delay it (yet again) because of the bad roads across Wyoming. The kids were disappointed (especially Leif), but were happily surprised yesterday to wake up to an unexpected outpouring of snow! I took Torben out on a walk in the morning while it was still snowing, not expecting it to be too deep, but soon found that it was about a foot deep! He had fun running everywhere, but since it was still snowing a lot, I cut our walk shorter than usual.

The kids and I took a snow day because it took over an hour to clear all the heavy snow from our driveway and sidewalks and of course the kids waned to play in it as much as possible. In the afternoon, we went sledding and everyone had a ton of fun.

We wrapped the afternoon up with hot chocolate and card games while I made broccoli soup and homemade bread for dinner. Everyone had a very fun day and was exhausted by the end (or maybe that was just me ;)

St. Patrick's Day and potato printing

Our kids look forward every year to the one day that they are allowed to eat a super sugary cereal for breakfast. Its silly- but they love it, so I've let them have Lucky Charms since Asher and Leif were little. Natalie has been checking out the box for the last week or so and when I explained that she could have them on St. Patrick's Day she exclaimed, "I love March!"

This has nothing to do with St. Patrick's Day, but just turned out to be what we were doing for our history/art lesson for the day. We did a project using potato stamps to learn more about the printing press. We talked about how many trials and errors it took before the printing press was possible and the kids learned different techniques for cutting their stamps and stamping them onto the paper. We originally started out just with shapes from mini cookie cutters, but Leif soon wanted to make the letters for his name and Asher and Heidi wanted to try as well. Helpfully, they share quite a few letters, so they could use the same stamps. Heidi's name worked out the best since I helped her make her stamps or she stole from Leif. I guess I never got a picture of Leif printing his name, which is too bad because it was his idea, but they had a lot of fun learning and being creative.
