Halloween 2023

Although we were just in Utah a few weeks ago for a wedding, my dad decided to come up to see the kids before the weather gets bad and its risky driving across Wyoming. Since there isn't enough sugar to be had on Halloween, he made a couple batches of cookies with them with mix from the store. They were delighted to get to be more hands-on since I usually only let them stir or pour a few ingredients in.

This Halloween was very chilly, so even though I had made the girls mermaid tails and my sister had printed them shells to go on t-shirts, they decided to use costumes they found from previous years for Halloween night. They wore their mermaid costumes to our church party that was mostly inside though. Leif also had a different costume for the party- he was a used candy salesman. He wore his church suit and taped old candy in rows all along the inside and even made business cards that said "Yours Sincerely Candy shop. He opted for the ghost costume on Halloween though, because he could wear as many layers of warm clothes as he wanted under the sheet. Trevor wore a blue carebear costume for the church party, but wanted to wear the tiger for Halloween. Asher was toying with the idea of being a vampire, but in the end decided he would just wear his motorcycle helmet and be a "rider". I'm guessing its because he didn't want to look like he'd gone all out on a costume if his friends decided not to dress up. (Some of the other boys had done the same thing with regular clothes on, but something in their pockets or some excuse for what they were dressed as.)

My dad and I took the kids trick-or-treating while Austin stayed home to hand out candy. We only went down two or three streets, but the kids got plenty of candy! About half way through, Leif was annoyed by his ghost sheet and Asher said the helmet was hurting his ears, so they dropped off their costumes with Austin and went around in their street clothes collecting candy. I don't give candy to big kids not wearing costumes, but they got away with it being with younger siblings and I guess the people on our street are push-overs. Leif cleverly told people he was a robber when they asked since he was wearing all black and had a full sack of his haul. We started early enough that it was only a little after 7:00 when we finished and we had time to watch a silly Halloween movie-Ernest Scared Stupid while the kids (and adults) ate a bunch of treats.
